Emily Marie Vierthaler (Dec. 1997) is a poet, dancer, and academic from Anchorage, Alaska (USA) who is active in artistic collaborations around the Netherlands. She draws inspiration from life's mysteries and where they intersect with neuroscience to form our perceived reality. She holds an MSc Neuroscience from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a 1st-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate.

On poetry:

I use poetry to figure out the world: because poetry behaves as an organic substance; it mirrors life. There is nothing black-and-white or direct about how life unfolds. It's rich and complex, and you project your own meaning onto it - and that's exactly the same way poetry works. You can sculpt life through words in that way.

Since age 20 I have performed at venues and on stages such as Festival Hongerige Wolf, Concordia: Theater on Tour, Granate Festival, De Lieveling, Living Village Festival, Rough Night Press, Notes of a Dirty Old Man, Subculture Cabaret, and Landjuweel. My poetry has also found its way into private dinner parties and philosophy events around commissioned themes. In 2023, I had the honor of serving on the jury for the second edition of the Netherlands Poetry Film Festival.

Thanks to a host of talented collaborators, my words have taken multidisciplinary forms: choir pieces, films, street calligraphy, expanded translations, birth cards, shows, and publications. And still the journey continues.

Get in touch if you would like to collaborate, commission custom pieces or performances, or just chat philosophical quandaries over a good cuppa'. Nederlands kan ook!
